The US has hailed the withdrawal of Eritrean forces from northern Ethiopia, a key step in the African Union led peace deal. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken called the withdrawal “significant progress” and urged access for international human rights monitors. It is unclear if the withdrawal is complete or if some Eritrean troops still remain. Blinken also expressed concern about instability in the Oromia region. The Tigray People’s Liberation Front agreed to disarm and reestablish the authority of the federal government in the peace deal. Human Rights Watch has accused Eritrean forces of committing atrocities in the region.
