The East African Community (EAC) has begun assessing Somalia’s eligibility to join the bloc, following the election of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. Somalia had previously applied to join the EAC in 2012, but was declined due to its troubles with AlShabaab and lack of a suitable legal stability. The verification team of experts from the EAC Partner States arrived in Somalia on January 25 and is expected to complete its work by February 3, 2023. SecretaryGeneral Peter Mathuki believes Somalia’s admission into the EAC would be beneficial as it would become the regional bloc’s responsibility to handle any issues, such as AlShabaab. Compared with South Sudan, there are concerns that admitting Somalia would serve to drag the region more into conflict than business, but Mathuki believes the exploitation of Somalia’s blue economy resources such as fish and the expansive coastline is set to boost the regional economy. Somalia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Abshir Omar expressed enthusiasm for the team set to assess his country’s readiness to join the bloc. The mission will be chaired by Ms Tiri Marie Rose from Burundi.

የምስራቅ አፍሪካ ማህበረሰብ (ኢኤሲ) የፕሬዚዳንት ሀሰን ሼክ መሀሙድ መመረጥን ተከትሎ ሶማሊያ ወደ ህብረቱ አባልነት መቀላቀሏን መገምገም ጀምሯል። ሶማሊያ ከዚህ ቀደም በ2012 የኢኤሲ አባል ለመሆን ጥያቄ ብታቀርብም ከአልሸባብ ጋር ባላት ችግር እና ተስማሚ የህግ መረጋጋት ባለማግኘቷ ውድቅ ተደረገች። ከኢኤሲ አጋር ሀገራት የተውጣጣው የባለሙያዎች ቡድን ጥር 25 ቀን ወደ ሶማሊያ የገባ ሲሆን ስራውን እስከ የካቲት 3 ቀን 2023 ያጠናቅቃል ተብሎ ይጠበቃል። ዋና ጸሃፊ ፒተር ማቱኪ የሶማሊያ ወደ ኢኤሲ መግባቷ የክልሉ ህብረቱ ሃላፊነት ስለሚሆን ይጠቅማል ብለው ያምናሉ። እንደ አልሸባብ ያሉ ማንኛውንም ጉዳዮችን ማስተናገድ። ከደቡብ ሱዳን ጋር ሲነፃፀር፣ ሶማሊያን መቀበል ከንግድ ስራ ይልቅ ቀጣናውን ወደ ግጭት ሊያስገባው ይችላል የሚል ስጋት አለ፣ ነገር ግን ማቱኪ የሶማሊያ ሰማያዊ ኢኮኖሚ ሀብቶች እንደ አሳ እና ሰፊ የባህር ዳርቻ መጠቀማቸው የቀጣናውን ኢኮኖሚ ለማሳደግ ተዘጋጅቷል ብሎ ያምናል። የሶማሊያ የውጭ ጉዳይ እና አለም አቀፍ ትብብር ሚኒስትር አብሽር ኦማር ሀገራቸው ህብረቱን ለመቀላቀል ያላትን ዝግጁነት ለመገምገም ለተዘጋጀው ቡድን ያላቸውን ጉጉት ገልፀዋል። ተልእኮውን የሚመራው በቡሩንዲ በ ወይዘሮ ቲሪ ማሪ ሮዝ ነው።
