Global smartphone shipments declined drastically in the fourth quarter of 2022, the largest drop ever recorded, due to macroeconomic weaknesses and soft consumer demand. According to market research firm IDC, a total of 1.21 billion smartphones were shipped in 2022, the lowest annual shipment total since 2013. Apple maintained its position as the number one smartphone maker, although their shipments declined 14.9% year on year. Samsung and Xiaomi, the second and third largest smartphone players, saw their shipments decline 15.6% and 26.3% year on year respectively. IDC predicts that 2023 will be a year of caution as vendors and channels think twice before taking on excess inventory.
