The Russian frigate Admiral Gorshkov will be taking part in joint naval exercises with the Chinese and South African navies from February 1726 near the port cities of Durban and Richards Bay on South Africa’s east coast. The exercise is the second of its kind involving the three countries, with the first occurring in 2019. The frigate is equipped with Zircon missiles, which President Vladimir Putin has said have “no analogues in the world.” Putin views the weapons as a way to pierce the United States’s increasingly sophisticated missile defences.

All three countries are in a race to develop hypersonic weapons, which are seen as a way to gain an edge due to their speed and manoeuvrability. Meanwhile, Russia continues to push towards Ukrainian towns in the conflict, which has been ongoing for over 300 days. Al Jazeera is asking for consent to collect personal information in order to provide an experience that gives a voice to the voiceless.
