From February 17 to 27, the South African armed forces, Russian and Chinese navies will take part in a maritime exercise off the coast of South Africa near Durban and Richards Bay. The Russian frigate Admiral Gorshkov will be participating in the drills and will be carrying Zircon missiles. The missiles have a range of over 620 miles and fly at nine times the speed of sound. The drill is meant to strengthen the “already flourishing” relations between the three nations, and is a reminder of the BRICS groupings. The US has expressed concerns about the drill, however it is of questionable military value as South Africa cannot assist Russia in its invasion of Ukraine.
