Uproar in Africa over Germany’s leopard jibe at Russia

This week, Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov visited Africa on a tour, and the German Foreign Ministry tweeted a leopard emoji in reference to the visit. African Union official Ebba Kalondo and others on social media found the tweet to be offensive, as it seemed to portray the African continent as only being about wild animals. The German Foreign Ministry apologized for the tweet and clarified that it was not intended to be offensive but rather to call out Russia’s lies in justifying its invasion of Ukraine. Lavrov visited South Africa, Eswatini, Angola, and Eritrea, and several African nations maintain historical ties with Moscow.
