Horn of Africa drought drives 22 million to hunger

The Horn of Africa is facing the worst drought in four decades, impacting 22 million people. The UN estimates that 12 million people in Ethiopia, 5.6 million in Somalia, and 4.3 million in Kenya are experiencing acute food insecurity.

The next rainy season, from March to May, is expected to be below average, which will worsen the situation. The UN is seeking $5.9 billion for humanitarian assistance, but only 55.5 percent has been funded. This crisis is likely to cause famine in Somalia and is already affecting 2.7 million children who have stopped going to school.
