Ethiopia’s Federal Police have been armed with armored vehicles and other heavy weaponry with the approval of the Chief of Staff of the Defense Force. This move is likely in response to the security crisis in the Oromo region, where militant ethnic nationalists have been attacking civilians. The move comes as public trust and support for Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s administration has been waning due to his failure to protect citizens and a campaign to Oromize Addis Ababa. At least 100 students and teachers have been arrested in connection with the resistance.
