The head of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Abune Mathias, has called on all bishops to convene in the capital, Addis Ababa, as the church faces a major split. Three bishops have formed a separate church decision making body, appointing more than 20 new bishops to replace those working in Oromia and southern Ethiopia. This is the second major division in the church, with the first one being in the US and this one coming from within Ethiopia. Abune Sawiros said they made the move to save followers of the church who were not diverse or inclusive. The patriarch called the bishops’ action illegal and other bishops have denounced it as a conspiracy.

የኢትዮጵያ ኦርቶዶክስ ተዋሕዶ ቤተ ክርስቲያን ሊቀ ጳጳስ ፓትርያርክ አቡነ ማቲያስ በዋና ከተማዋ አዲስ አበባ ቤተ ክርስቲያኒቱ ከፍተኛ መከፋፈል ላይ በመሆኑ ሁሉም ጳጳሳት እንዲሰበሰቡ ጥሪ አቅርበዋል። ሦስት ጳጳሳት በኦሮሚያና በደቡብ ኢትዮጵያ የሚሠሩትን ለመተካት ከ20 በላይ ጳጳሳትን ሾመው የተለየ የቤተ ክርስቲያን ውሳኔ ሰጪ አካል አቋቁመዋል። ይህ በቤተ ክርስቲያን ውስጥ ሁለተኛው ትልቅ ክፍል ሲሆን የመጀመሪያው በአሜሪካ ሲሆን ይህ ደግሞ ከኢትዮጵያ ውስጥ ነው። አቡነ ሳዊሮስ የወሰዱት እርምጃ የተለያየ ወይም የማያሳስብ የቤተ ክርስቲያን ተከታዮችን ለማዳን ነው ብለዋል። ፓትርያርኩ የኤጲስ ቆጶሳቱን ድርጊት ሕገ ወጥ ሲሉ ሌሎች ጳጳሳትም በሴራ ኮንነዋል።
