Victoria Azarenka, the 24th seed from Belarus, defeated third seed Jessica Pegula 64, 61 in the Australian Open quarterfinals. Azarenka had to fight for the win, as Pegula saved six break points in the first set before finally getting on the scoreboard. Azarenka’s defense and her ability to put pressure on during long rallies were evident in the first set, and she was eventually able to take the opener after 64 physical minutes. In the second set, Azarenka broke for 31 and held her own service game, and was able to win the match after only one match point. She will now face Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina in the semifinals.
