የኢትዮጵያ ቤተ ክርስቲያንን ለመከፋፈል እንደ ሕገወጥና ፖለቲካዊ ዓላማ በተወሰደው እርምጃ የፓትርያሪኮች ቡድን ለኦሮሚያ ክልል አዲስ ቅዱስ ሲኖዶስ አወጀ። ጳጳስ አቡነ ሳዊሮስ የኢትዮጵያ ቤተ ክርስቲያን ርዕሰ ሊቃነ ጳጳሳት ሆነው በሦስተኛነት ቢጨርሱም የኦሮሚያ ፓትርያርክ ሆነው ተሹመዋል። የኢትዮጵያ ፓትርያርክ ብፁዕ ወቅዱስ አቡነ ማቲያስ ድርጊቱ ሕገ ወጥ ነው በማለት የኢትዮጵያ መንግሥት እርምጃ እንዲወስድ ጠይቀዋል። ምእመናን ነቅተው እንዲጠብቁና ከቅዱስ ሲኖዶስ የሚመጡ መልዕክቶችን ትኩረት እንዲሰጡም መክረዋል። እርምጃው በፖለቲከኞች የተደገፈ ነው የሚል ግምት አለ። ጠ/ሚ አብይ አህመድ እስካሁን የሰጡት አስተያየት የለም።

A group of Patriarchs have declared a new Holy Synod for the Oromia region in what is seen as an illegal and politically motivated move to divide the Ethiopian Church. Bishop Abune Sawiros was appointed as the Patriarch of Oromia, despite finishing third in the election for the position of Head of the Ethiopian Church. Ethiopian Patriarch His Holiness Abune Mathias has declared the move illegal and has called on the Ethiopian government to take action. He has also advised the faithful to stay vigilant and pay attention to messages from the Holy Synod. There is speculation that the move is backed by politicians. PM Abiy Ahmed has not yet commented on the development.
