The economic conditions have caused widespread anger at the government and has forced many Iranians to focus on survival. The 2015 nuclear deal with world powers was undone when Trump withdrew the US and restored crippling sanctions, with Iran responding by ramping up its uranium enrichment. The Biden administration supports a return to the 2015 agreement, however negotiations have stalled. Antigovernment protests have occurred since the death of a 22yearold KurdishIranian woman, with Iran blaming foreign powers for the unrest. The Trump administration had hoped that maximum sanctions would force Iran to make major concessions, however they have yet to do so.
