Nigeria is in the midst of the tightest election since the end of military rule in 1999, with 15 presidential candidates vying for the winning spot. Results from Ekiti state show a clear victory for the ruling party candidate, Bola Tinubu. Voting was postponed in some areas due to delays and attacks on polling stations. Turnout is high, especially among young people. Peter Obi of the Labour Party, Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress, and Atiku Abubakar of the main opposition People’s Democratic Party are all seen as potential winners. A candidate needs to have the most votes and 25% of ballots cast in twothirds of Nigeria’s 36 states to be declared the winner. Saturday’s voting was marred by delays and reports of ballotbox snatching, and some people waited up to 13 hours to vote. There have been complaints over the use of the electronic voting system and tension in some areas over the results being collated. Final results are not expected until Monday or Wednesday. The next president will need to deal with a crumbling economy, high youth unemployment, and widespread insecurity. National groups are promising to spend big on the highstakes Supreme Court election, which could determine the fate of abortion access in the state.
