The Somali Regional State Communications Bureau has suspended the operations of 15 foreign media outlets in the region, including BBC and VOA Somali services, for not having proper media accreditation. This decision was made following a letter written by the Ethiopian Media Authority on January 27 urging the regional government to take action. The regional government is being accused of using the license issue as a pretext to silence critical foreign media outlets in the region. The Ethiopian Media Authority confirmed the letter, but denied knowledge of the decision to ban the media outlets.
