On 23 February 2023, Cambodia reported two cases of human infection with avian influenza A (H5N1) virus, the first since 2014. The 11yearold girl from Prey Veng province, in the south of Cambodia, died the next day and her father, who was identified as a close contact, is in isolation. Almost all Influenza A (H5N1) cases in people have been associated with close contact with infected live or dead birds, or Influenza A (H5N1)contaminated environments. As of 25 February 2023, 873 human cases of infection with influenza A (H5N1) and 458 deaths have been reported globally from 21 countries. Vaccines against avian influenza A (H5N1) for human use have been developed for pandemic use but are not widely available. WHO recommends that all people involved in work with poultry or birds should have a seasonal influenza vaccination and travelers to countries with known outbreaks of animal influenza should avoid farms, contact with animals in live animal markets, entering areas where animals may be slaughtered, or contact with any surfaces that appear to be contaminated with animal faeces. As of now, the risk to the general population posed by this virus is low and WHO does not advise special traveler screening at points of entry or restrictions. All human infections caused by a novel influenza subtype are notifiable under the International Health Regulations (IHR).
